Situated in the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park, the Messel Pit is one of the world’s most significant fossil sites and is where fossilized animals such as the famous primeval horse, or eohippus, were found. World Heritage Messel Pit Co. cooperates with Odenwald Tourism LLC to promote the development of tourism at the Messel Pit in the county of Darmstadt-Dieburg. With the support of the German UNESCO World Heritage Site promotional programme, the Messel Pit is to perform a “lighthouse function” in the UNESCO World Heritage adventure land.
Since 2003, it has been the task of World Heritage Messel Co. to present the first UNESCO World Nature Heritage in Germany. To supplement the guided tours at the Messel Pit, visitors to the Visitors’ Centre can experience the many facets of geological research. The aim is to make the World Heritage and the Geo-Theme World accessible to visitors in an entertaining fashion.
Odenwald Tourism LLC was formed in 2008 and is the central organization for tourism marketing at the destination Odenwald. The aim of all involved parties is to interest visitors in the Odenwald forest as a nature reserve and leisure area and reinforce the commercial development of the region.
