Over the more than 200 years of its history, the IMPERIAL Shipping Group has developed from a coal transporter to Europe’s largest inland shipping company. Its roots lie in the Haniel shipping company, owned by the Duisburg family of entrepreneurs of the same name. At the start of this century, IMPERIAL Logistics International took over the shipping company and turned it into the IMPERIAL Shipping Group. The Duisburg-based shipping company is now Europe’s leading inland shipping company, with 24 subsidiaries in 23 locations and a total fleet comprised of over 200 fully owned and 500 chartered units. Its range of services includes not only dry cargo, tank, gas and coastal shipping, but also container transport and industrial logistics. A staff of 1,100 and contact offices in France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Bulgaria make sure that goods such as coal, mineral oils, chemicals, gases, metal, ore, stones, soils and oversized plant sections – loads of around 60 million tonnes per year (2013) – reach their destinations. The IMPERIAL Shipping Group’s push boats and barges have long travelled beyond Europe’s borders, transporting raw materials between Brazil and Argentina on the Hidrovia Paraná river system.
