All future scenarios of our energy supply confirm this: It will take a long time before we can count on a full supply of renewables. There is no quick exit. Currently, 90 per cent of Germany’s energy requirements are still covered by fossil energy sources. Besides Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein is the state with the highest number of productive oilfields in the Federal Republic of Germany. Oil production has a long tradition here. RWE Dea has been a reliable partner of Schleswig-Holstein for decades. The internationally active natural gas and oil exploration and production company manages the Mittelplate consortium. From the Mittelplate drilling and production island, seven kilometres off the western coast of Schleswig-Holstein, the crude oil is pumped through pipelines to the refineries in Friedrichskoog, where it is processed and finally transferred to Brunsbüttel and to the consumers. As a member of the RWE group, one of the largest energy supply companies in Europe, RWE Dea is setting the benchmark in matters of environmental protection and safety. Moreover, domestic oil production contributes to the promotion of the location and region by creating direct and indirect jobs and by payments of annual royalties.
