Opel Wien GmbH: Major powertrain plant of General Motors worldwide

Every second powertrain, the heart of Opel or Vauxhall vehicles, comes from Vienna. Thanks to this, the company is contributing significantly to the current success of the Opel product range.

In the nearly three decades since start of production, Opel Vienna has continuoslly set standards in quality, reliability and productivity and, through its consistent implementation of downsizing technology, shows that its product portfolio is more than trendy.

Opel Wien GmbH, with its annual production of over 1.5 million units, is the largest General Motors powertrain plant in the world. From start of production in 1982 up to the end of 2010, over 31 million engines and transmissions were produced. The main recipients are still the Opel plants in Europe. However, because globalization is ever progressing, customers are situated in Brazil, the USA, China, Russia, South Korea and Australia now. In the years 2008 to 2011, and despite the worldwide economic crises, the Group invested more than 200 million euros in the site – mainly for the new 1.4 liter turbo motor. Opel Vienna is one of the region’s most important employers. Currently nearly 2,200 persons from Vienna, Lower Austria and the neighbouring states work at the site.
