In the year 2006, we celebrated the twentieth anniversary of two milestones that brought radical changes to the lives of all Catalan citizens: Spain’s incorporation into the European Union and the appointment of Barcelona as the venue for the 1992 Olympic Games.
Now, looking back, we see that twenty years ago Catalonia was on the verge of one of the most important economic and social outbursts that any European region could have experienced in the second half of the 20th century. We have fully entered the 21st century, submerged in unstoppable processes to which we have to adapt and turn into opportunities. Catalonia starts up from a privileged position, with a solid economic basis and an ever-richer social network. In Barcelona alone live people from more than 160 different nationalities; Catalonia is close to reaching the marks of 3.5 million job positions and 600,000 companies, and it maintains almost 800,000 industrial job positions.
Throughout this book, the reader will find plenty and diverse arguments which corroborate in detail our proposals. They are facts exposed by the main responsibles of turning this new stage into reality, people who show their personal and professional commitment to the future.
