Where cast iron and mechanical engineering once ruled peoples’ lives, today a restored museum complex bears witness to the successful conversion of an officially listed industrial site. Our exhibition under the motto “EXPERIENCE INDUSTRY IN CHANGE” is subdivided into various themes, which present important areas of the industrial world from mining and the textile industry through mechanical engineering and automotive manufacturing to the social consequences of industrialisation.
One highlight of the exhibition is a silver band running through the entire hall, which shows a selection of outstanding products from Saxony. Another “jewel” is the “engine room” with a steam engine from 1896, which has been restored after a historic model. Many engineering originals in the museum’s permanent exhibition have been fully restored to function as before and are operated by skilled employees.
The Chemnitz Museum of Industry is one of four member facilities of Saxony’s Special Industrial Museum Association, whose bases are located in various places in the state and which pursue the common goal of preserving, supporting and presenting in museum form the state’s important industrial monuments, industrial history and culture.
