The author, who was born in Burladingen in 1942, studied business administration in Cologne. In 1969 he took over the management of his grandfather’s company. Under his leadership, the range of production was expanded to include t-shirts, sweatshirts, sports and leisure wear. Wolfgang Grupp is still the sole proprietor and managing director of Trigema.

Competitiveness requires flexibility – Innovative concepts in the textile industry

Trigema always keeps values in
mind and delivers innovative products.

It is the duty of the entrepreneurs to use the low-priced production locations abroad in a way that does not reduce domestic jobs but rather contributes to strengthening these domestic jobs!In the long run, standard products or mass products can no longer be produced in high-wage countries. They can or rather must be relocated in time. But technically superior products must not be relocated and must be manufactured in our high-tech country, so we don’t lose control of our know-how once and forever!

So, if you manufacture abroad you do not necessarily have to make domestic jobs redundant; on the contrary, the cost advantages abroad should contribute to keeping and extending the production at domestic locations!

A successful company must relocate to low-wage countries in time. Then, of course, outsourcing simpler tasks gives it the opportunity to lastingly secure domestic jobs responsible for highgrade tasks!

This means, we need our jobs in manufacturing; these, however, need a different foundation. Not so many simple or standard tasks but rather tasks with higher requirements to our staff, not only because they receive higher wages but most of all because they have the relevant training! In times when the fulfilment of demands is long since past and you only can sell if you create demands, it is very important for a manufacturing company to be independent!

Embroidering the Trigema logo
in the third production phase.

I have known many textile manufacturers; almost all of them were established millionaires when they still produced 100 per cent in Germany. But I do not know anyone who became richer after they started using the supposedly cheaper employees abroad, yet I know many who became poorer or do not exist any longer!

Almost everybody made themselves dependent on their customers because they ran after bulk orders and did not realize in time that such orders do not go together with a high-wage country.

In an economy in which all demands are fulfilled the manufacturer must stay in touch with the consumer and cultivate this relationship – for example in form of own shops - to avoid the total dependency on commercial customers.

In addition, it is important to continuously add innovative new products to your product range. At the same time, products must be given up in a timely manner if they have become mass products and can be manufactured in low-wage countries as well.

Trigema works 1 in Burladingen.

This means, it is an important task of the management not only to recognize such a continuous change of products but most of all to carry it out. A high-wage country needs new and innovative products. However, after some years globalization will turn these products into mass products. In that case they must soon be given up and replaced by other new products in the high-wage countries.
If this change is recognized it will still be possible to secure jobs at the production location of Germany in future.

The entrepreneurs’ responsibility and performance are the sole conditions for an efficient industry in a social market economy and thereby they guarantee secure jobs in this country!
