The Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology (Fraunhofer IWS) carries out application-oriented research and development in the area of laser and surface technology. The basis of research activities is formed by highly developed materials and nanotechnology know-how linked with the possibility of comprehensive material characterization.
In the field of laser technology, IWS concentrates on materials-oriented laser materials processing and the development of laser-specific system solutions. The objective is to develop innovative technologies for industrial enterprises and to support the implementation thereof.
In the area of surface- and coating technology, the central focus of development lies in wear protection, oxidation protection and functional coatings as well as the removal, structuring and repair of surfaces. Thereby plasma-based finishing processes are increasingly applied.
Through close collaboration with facility and system providers, IWS offers one-stop solutions. The overall view of the processing system, the procedure as well as component performance serves as the basis thereof. The Fraunhofer IWS, equipped with the most modern systems technology, guarantees the effective handling of assignments at the highest possible level.
