Fraunhofer-Institut für Werkstoff- und Strahltechnik IWS: Customer-oriented problem solving

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology (Fraunhofer IWS) car­­ries out application-oriented research and development in the area of laser and surface technology. The basis of research activities is formed by highly developed materials and nano­­tech­­nol­­ogy know-how linked with the possibility of comprehensive material characterization.
In the field of laser technology, IWS concentrates on materials-oriented laser ma­­terials processing and the development of laser-specific system solutions. The objective is to develop innovative technologies for industrial enterprises and to support the implementation there­­of.
In the area of surface- and coating technology, the central focus of development lies in wear protection, oxidation protection and functional coatings as well as the removal, structuring and repair of sur­­faces. Thereby plasma-based finishing processes are increasingly applied.
Through close collaboration with facility and system providers, IWS offers one-stop solutions. The overall view of the processing system, the procedure as well as component performance ser­ves as the basis thereof. The Fraunhofer IWS, equipped with the most modern systems technology, guarantees the effective handling of assignments at the highest possible level.
