Fraunhofer-Institut für Elektronenstrahl- und Plasmatechnik: Application-oriented research at the location of Dresden

Following the German reunion, the Fraunhofer Institute for Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP was es­­tablished by working groups of the former Manfred von Ardenne R&D institute.
One main field of activity of the Fraunhofer FEP is the thin film technology. This includes coating of sheets, strips and components made of diverse materials with various layers or layer systems. Many items of our daily life like plastic web for packaging or facade cladding are not cogitable without adapted layer qualities.

The second main field of activity of the FEP is the electron beam technology. The electron beam is being used for the welding and evaporation of metals as well as for the modification in edge layers. Further applications are the curing of lacquers or the improvement of plastics properties.

Features of FEP’s research and development are its customer-orientation and high relevance to industry. The important branches are the building industry, transport sector, information technology, engineering, pharmaceutics, medicine and renewable energy. A network of national and internation­al co-operating partners is supporting this work.
