The Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V. (Berlin Research Association, or FVB) is one of Berlin’s largest research institutions. It consists of eight scientifically independent institutes, which make vital contributions of international significance to socially relevant key fields in the natural, life and environmental sciences and in engineering. The institutes are members of the Leibniz Association.
The member institutes of the FVB were formed in 1992. They emerged from former research institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) following a positive evaluation by the German Science Council.
The member institutes of the FVB are international leaders in their respective fields and play a leading role in determining the scientific development of each area of research. In doing so they are often active at the interfaces of various disciplines.
The FVB’s 20-year-plus history shows this to be a success model on the German scientific landscape. The joint state-federal financing model generates important potential for the further expansion of international competitiveness.
