In Prognos studies, Regensburg has been named one of the strongest growing and most dynamic municipalities in Germany for many years. Innovative industrial companies such as BMW, Osram, Infineon, Continental, Siemens or GE Aviation have settled here. 31,000 young people study at the university and the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences (Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg), which shares a university campus with the university hospital and district clinical centre. A significant driver of this development was and is the active municipal business development. BioPark Regensburg GmbH was founded in 1999 as an enterprise of the City of Regensburg with the objective of establishing biotechnology as a new business sector at the location and in the region and offering commercial laboratory space.
Today, the BioPark and BioRegio Regensburg have developed into the second-largest life science cluster and centre in Bavaria (after Munich), with 48 companies and 3,369 employees. Currently, 36 companies and institutions with 600 employees occupy 18,000 square metres of space. In the last 15 years, 24 start-up teams were supported in the region and 496 million euros was secured, of which 116 million euros is venture capital and 245 million euros is equity.
