Airbus Deutschland GmbH: Dual graduate studies theory and practice

“The features are great, the equipment is new, the communication system works. And the interlocking of theory and practice protects against unworldliness,” says Tom Kasch about his dual training – at the Nordakademie Elmshorn and at Airbus in Finkenwerder. He is one of the first 195 graduates of the dual Bachelor’s programme at the Nordakademie. Airbus is cooperating with the college. This is an efficient economic connection between Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. In 2006, Tom Kasch started his three-and-a-half-year training from Airbus with a training contract. “At first, I was to learn filing, turning and riveting in metal training. Then, off to the hangars: equipment installation, frame installation, FAL, before the first semester in Elmshorn, followed by a practical assignment at Airbus,“ he said. He wrote a Bachelor’s thesis on “Lean engineering”. In Schleswig-Holstein, he had lectures with 25 other students: “That was a privileged learning environment. We were having discussions with our lecturers, which is impossible at regular universities with 500 people in an auditorium,“ he says, viewing his career entry at Airbus with serenity. “I feel integrated, experienced with systems, processesand thousands of Airbus abbreviations. As a lean expert, I would like to contribute to Airbus becoming the world’s best aircraft company.“
